Five Takeaways from the 2026 East Coast Gathering
At these Gatherings, we reflect on our own work, as well as the larger impact investing ecosystem and the financial and social capital that sustains it. Our East Coast Gathering brought together more than 80 investors, entrepreneurs, and practitioners to explore what’s shaping the future of markets, systems, and communities.
Here are five takeaways that stood out and continue to inform how we think about impact investing today:
1. Supporting America’s Farmers Requires Flexible Capital
Conversations with Woodcock Foundation and Potlikker Capital highlighted the importance of patient, community-centered financing that supports small and historically underserved farmers. Expanding access to capital is essential to preserving diverse agricultural communities, strengthening local food systems, and building long-term resilience.
2. AI Is Giving Impact Companies an Edge
A recurring theme across the day: AI is proving useful for impact companies and strengthening their defensibility. Solving social and environmental problems typically requires hardware, services, and human relationships, not just software. AI doesn’t change that, but it’s enabling efficiencies that improve unit economics and accessibility without hollowing out impact outcomes. Examples from our portfolio: Manifest enabling small business owners in pet care or funeral services to access expertise that used to be out of reach; Retirable reducing the cost of retirement planning without sacrificing quality for low-income Americans; Flourish Health expanding the number of youth their care pods can support. The through-line: the companies closest to real human need may be the ones that benefit from AI most.
3. The Energy Transition Is Ripe for Sustained Investment
Due to changes in policy and technology over the last 15 years, the U.S. has become the world’s largest oil producer and a major net exporter. At the same time, renewables have grown tremendously and accounted for the vast majority of new grid capacity added in the U.S. last year. Although policy headwinds have created some uncertainty, solar in particular continues to expand, boosted by battery storage growth. The panel emphasized that the next phase of the transition will require stronger collaboration between public institutions, private investors, and emerging energy companies — and financing models built to sustain implementation for the long haul.
4. Climate Change Is Inevitable, Climate Literacy Is Essential
Probable Futures joined us to underscore that climate change is no longer a distant or abstract challenge; it is actively reshaping how people and communities are living today. Moreover, climate risk has become a core factor shaping investment, infrastructure, and business planning. Building resilience will require organizations and individuals to reconsider outdated assumptions, engage with real data, and think and speak clearly about what’s coming. Probable Futures drove this home by showing real datasets and talking through concrete examples – including the current state and future of olive growing.
5. As Impact Investing Matures, So Does the Opportunity
Our team reflected on where the field stands: impact investing has evolved from an emerging idea into an established field, and like any maturing industry, that evolution brings both dislocation and opportunity. Near-term headwinds are genuine; liquidity and exits remain constrained, the political and cultural environment is complex, and navigating fiduciary scrutiny requires more rigor than ever. But the structural tailwinds are powerful: a $100T wealth transfer, growing interest in private markets, and a reset macroeconomic context. For investors focused on strong fundamentals, the field is entering an exciting phase.
